More frequently involves the 2nd Metatarsal Head, where in growing children there is a force that disturbs the growth plate leading to pain and Mis-shaping of the Metatarsal head.
It can occur in other lesser metatarsals but the 2nd is the next bone on from the 1st and in many feet there is a tendency for the 1st
Metatarsal to not do it’s job properly.
This occurs in Hypermobile feet, or feet that have been forced into excess pronation.
Due to the anatomical ability of the 1st Metatarsal to move upwards when under pressure, it allows force to move to the 2nd
Metatarsal which is anatomically not designed to take it. Hence the potential disturbance.
Identifying the individual reasons behind why the 2nd Metatarsal is taking those forces is the key to reducing them and allowing recovery.
