Children's Feet Problem

Children's Future Postural Problems

There is not a day that goes by driving to work that I don’t observe children walking to school.

I can’t help doing a snap analysis of the incredible variety of gait and postural issues observed.

With the NHS under strain and services limited in the sphere of Podopaediatrics (Children’s Podiatry), nobody is effectively assessing, advising and proactively dealing with our children.

Most of the children I see in clinic come in with sport related growth plate injuries or Hypermobility related foot strain. There is no avenue to pre- assess unless parents are willing to go private.

Unfortunately, this cost money.

There is no state help that is timeous, efficient and effective. I state this as I see on a regular basis children that have already gone through the state system.

Over worked, time constrained and long waiting lists make it extremely hard to get a satisfactory result.

What I am not seeing is the damage that will occur to these developing children not only physically but mentally when their gait and posture can influence their abilities in many spheres of life.

Hypermobility syndrome and all it variations can present as a disincentive to participate in sport and the consequence of the tendency to spend a lot of time in front of the technology and gaming creates a negative mix of tension in muscles and compensatory postural effects.

With young people growing so fast the impact on their spines can be noticeable with poor posture and head position.

The effect of tension on their feet can cause flat feet and knock knees. This can be painful or at least it can disincentivise sporting behaviour.

Footwear choices can contribute to the overall picture too.

All children should be checked at least from 6-7 years old as a matter of routine.

At this point addressing foot concerns and identifying potential postural issues can start the process of preventing what may happen in the future.

Waiting for ‘something to go wrong ‘is too late. I don’t mean we cannot deal with it, but it often costs more in rehabilitation to get better.

Growth Plate Injuries (Osteochondritis)

There are several main growth plates injuries that present in clinic:
