Rehabilitation and Biokinetics

Helping You Recover, Rebuild and Move with Confidence

Footmech is pleased to welcome Gheum Swart, a specialist Biokineticist working alongside Iain Johnston to provide rehabilitation, neural assessment and movement-based treatment.

While Iain focuses on podiatry, foot function and the biomechanical causes of pain, Gheum provides the rehabilitation that helps the body regain strength, control and confidence. By combining their different areas of expertise, patients can receive more complete support throughout their recovery.

Gheum will see some patients at Footmech’s Reigate clinic. In other cases, Iain may refer patients to Gheum when rehabilitation or further movement-based treatment would support their recovery.

Meet Gheum Swart

Gheum helps people recover from injury, manage ongoing pain and improve the way their bodies move.

His approach looks at more than the area that hurts. Pain, weakness or recurring injuries can sometimes be linked to the way the nervous system, muscles and joints work together. By assessing these connections, Gheum can identify areas of weakness, poor control or inefficient movement that may be affecting recovery.

Treatment is then tailored to the individual, with a focus on restoring movement, rebuilding strength and helping the body function more effectively.

What Is Biokinetics?

Biokinetics uses movement and carefully prescribed exercise to support rehabilitation, physical function and long-term wellbeing.

Rather than offering a general exercise programme, a Biokineticist assesses how an individual moves and identifies the physical factors that may be contributing to pain, weakness or reduced performance.

A personalised rehabilitation programme can then be created to help:

  • Restore movement following injury or surgery
  • Rebuild strength and stability
  • Improve balance and coordination
  • Reduce the risk of recurring injuries
  • Support the management of long-term pain
  • Improve everyday movement and sporting performance
  • Build confidence when returning to normal activities

Each programme is adapted to the patient’s current ability, condition and personal goals.

Neural and Movement Assessment

Movement depends on clear communication between the brain, nervous system and muscles.

Following injury, surgery or an extended period of pain, these connections may not work as effectively as they once did. A muscle may be strong enough in isolation but fail to activate correctly during walking, running or another movement.

Gheum’s assessments consider coordination, muscle activation, balance, reflexes, joint control and overall movement patterns. This can help identify why an area continues to feel weak, unstable or painful, even after the original injury has healed.

The assessment provides the foundation for a rehabilitation programme designed around the individual rather than a standard set of exercises.

Rehabilitation After Injury or Surgery

Returning to normal activity after an injury or operation can take time. It is not simply about waiting for pain to disappear. Strength, mobility and control often need to be rebuilt gradually.

Gheum can support rehabilitation following:

  • Sports injuries
  • Joint and muscle injuries
  • Knee, ankle and foot injuries
  • Back, hip and shoulder problems
  • Orthopaedic surgery
  • Extended periods of reduced activity
  • Recurring injuries or movement difficulties

Compex Muscle Stimulation

Gheum incorporates Compex Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation into rehabilitation when it is appropriate for the individual.

Compex uses controlled electrical impulses to stimulate targeted nerves and muscles. It can be used alongside movement and exercise to support muscle activation, strength development, circulation and recovery.

This can be particularly helpful when an injury or operation has caused a muscle to weaken or become difficult to activate effectively.

Compex does not replace rehabilitation exercises. It is one of the tools Gheum can use to help the body respond more effectively to a carefully planned rehabilitation programme.

Improving Biomechanics and Movement

The way one area of the body moves can affect another.

Restricted movement in the ankle may influence the knee or hip. Weakness around the pelvis may change how someone walks or runs. A previous injury may also cause the body to compensate, placing additional strain elsewhere.

Gheum considers the complete movement pattern rather than concentrating only on the painful area. Treatment may include exercises to improve:

  • Strength
  • Mobility
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Muscle activation
  • Joint control
  • Posture
  • Walking and running mechanics

The goal is to help patients move more efficiently, reduce unnecessary strain and return to their usual activities with greater confidence.

Working Alongside Iain Johnston

Iain and Gheum offer different but complementary areas of expertise.

Iain assesses and treats foot function, musculoskeletal conditions and biomechanical problems affecting the feet, ankles, legs, knees, hips and lower back. Gheum can then provide the structured rehabilitation needed to reinforce improvements, rebuild strength and restore movement.

Where appropriate, Iain may refer a patient to Gheum as part of their treatment. Gheum can also refer a patient back to Iain if an assessment identifies a foot, nail or podiatric condition requiring specialist attention.

This collaborative approach gives patients access to connected care without being passed between unrelated providers.

Who May Benefit?

An appointment with Gheum may be suitable for people who:

  • Are recovering from an injury or operation
  • Experience recurring pain or repeated injuries
  • Feel weak or unstable during movement
  • Have completed treatment but do not feel fully recovered
  • Want to return to walking, running, sport or exercise
  • Need support managing a long-term musculoskeletal condition
  • Want to improve their movement or physical performance
  • Have been referred by Iain following podiatric treatment

You do not need to be an athlete to benefit. Rehabilitation can help anyone who wants to move more comfortably and confidently in everyday life.

Book an Assessment with Gheum

Your first appointment will give Gheum the opportunity to understand your symptoms, medical and injury history, current movement and what you want to achieve.

Following the assessment, Gheum will explain his findings and recommend the most appropriate next steps. If rehabilitation is suitable, you will receive a personalised programme designed around your needs and progress.

To book an assessment with Gheum or ask whether his services may be suitable for you, please contact us.
