Corns and calluses

Corns and calluses are thick, hardened layers of skin that form to protect your feet from friction and pressure. They're common, and they don't have to be put up with.

Corns or calluses?

  • Calluses are broader areas of hard skin, often under the ball of the foot or around the heel.
  • Corns are smaller, concentrated areas with a hard centre that presses into the skin, often on or between toes. They can be very painful.

Why they form

Hard skin builds up where there is repeated pressure or rubbing: tight or high-heeled shoes, toe shapes such as hammer toes and bunions, a bony prominence, or the way your foot loads as you walk. Removing the hard skin brings relief, and reducing the pressure stops it returning so quickly.

How we help

  • Painless removal of corns and reduction of callus.
  • Pressure relief padding and offloading.
  • Care for cracked heels and dry skin.
  • Footwear and self-care advice.
  • A biomechanical assessment if the pattern of hard skin suggests your foot is overloading in one area.

Routine corn and callus care is available with our Foot Health Practitioner, Sapir Kulla. Appointments are £50.

If you have diabetes or poor circulation, avoid corn plasters and cutting hard skin yourself. Have it treated professionally.

Common questions

Do corn plasters work?
Medicated corn plasters contain acid that can damage healthy skin, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation. We'd recommend professional care instead.
Will my corn come back?
It may if the pressure causing it continues. Changing footwear, padding or how the foot loads can keep it away for longer.
