What is involved?
Usually we remove a narrow strip from the edge of the nail (a partial nail avulsion). The nail bed underneath is treated so that section doesn't grow back. Occasionally the whole nail is removed (a total nail avulsion). No stitches are needed.
- Before: we check your health and medication and explain the procedure.
- On the day: a local anaesthetic numbs the toe, the nail section is removed and the toe dressed.
- Going home: you can walk normally but need a lift, as you can't drive with a numb toe.
- Aftercare: your first redressing appointment is 2 to 5 days later, with more arranged as needed. See our guide to changing your dressing at home.
Healing
Average healing time is 4 to 5 weeks. Keep the toe clean and covered while it heals to reduce the risk of infection.
Our nail surgery dressing guide explains how to change your dressing, what is normal and when to contact us.
What will my toe look like?
After a partial nail avulsion the nail will be narrower than before, but we work to keep the toe looking as natural as possible. After a total avulsion the nail won't grow back. If appearance matters to you, talk it through with Iain beforehand.
Risks
- The success rate is very good.
- Some regrowth happens in about 5 to 7 percent of cases and may need further treatment.
- Infection happens in about 10 percent of cases and may need a short course of antibiotics.
- The risk of a blood clot (DVT) is extremely low. Tell Iain if you have had one before.
